Southsea, Fratton and the island city

Portsmouth is on Portsea Island and is the second most densely populated city in the UK, after London. Areas people mention include Southsea, Fratton, Old Portsmouth, Cosham, Landport and the Gunwharf Quays waterfront. Its housing includes a lot of Victorian and Edwardian terraces.

Because so many homes are close together, there are many separate kitchens in a small area.

The navy, the University and the ferries

The city is home to a Royal Navy base and the University of Portsmouth, so the city has a student population too. Portsmouth also has a ferry port. Havant, Gosport, Fareham and Waterlooville are close by if you later wanted to work beyond the city.

Portsmouth has trains to London Waterloo on the Portsmouth Direct line. From Waterloo you continue across London to the Bromley area, where Bromley South has direct trains from London Victoria.
